Portaria is both a winter and summer destination and every year attracts many visitors and non-local people who want to make a little getaway from the daily grind. It is just 12 km from the city of Volos and 13 from the ski center of Pelion. It is built at an altitude of 650 meters around the monastery of Panagia Portareas built in the 13th century. In Portaria visitors can walk the trails and cobbled streets, visit old Byzantine churches and monasteries
Makrynitsa village is built incrementally on the mountainside. It is a very picturesque village, full of cobbled streets and traditional stone houses in every corner; the square is full of ancient trees. Makrynitsa offers breathtaking view all over Volos area.We invite you to get your coffee at the village square and visit on the occasion the church of St. John the Baptist and admire the fresco by painter Theophilos, dating from 1910.
PELION SKI CENTRE
One of the oldest ski resorts in our country, the Pelion Ski Centre was created in 1967 by the Greek Mountaineering Club of Volos, while in 1997 the management of the center was undertaken by the Development Company of Magnesia. Located in "Agrioleukes" 12 km away from Portaria, 2 km from Chania and 27 km from Volos. The ski resort is very popular and busy during the winter season.
THE LITTLE TRAIN OF PELION The "Moutzouris"
The train of Pelion, the legendary "smudge" was dynamic element of culture and development, strongly marked the history of the place. The design and supervision was by the Italian engineer Evaristo de Chirico, father of the famous surrealist painter Giorgio de Chirico. Due to the morphology of the ground the rails line is only 60 cm wide. This is the narrower railway line in Greece and one of the narrower in the world.
Is the largest and most historic village of East Pelion. It is 47 km away from Volos and lies on a green and sunny slope, divided in four major districts (or Perahora Agia Paraskevi, Agia Kyriaki, Saint George, Sotira). Visitor looking at it from the opposite side of the mountain get the impression that is a group of four villages.
Tsagarada is the most cosmopolitan village of Pelion- a year round holiday destination. The village is full of life, as it offers many hotels and traditional guesthouses, restaurants, taverns, cafes and shops of folkloric and traditional arts. The narrow lanes of Tsagarada offered for walk, gives the visitor the opportunity to admire the traditional architecture of Pelion and the magic of nature.
